Mike's Review
The trailer for this did exactly what trailers are meant to do, it made the film look good and made me want to see it! It was also a twist on your typical Rom-Com infusing action into it.
The film is about two close friends who are CIA agents. On a mission they kill the brother of an arms dealer. After the mission, Tuck (Tom Hardy) uses an online dating site to meet Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) and the two hit it off. After the date she accidentally meets FDR (Chris Pine) and he pursues her unaware that she is seeing his friend. When the friends find out they decide to let her choose but each end up trying to secretly sabotage the others dates.
This was a good idea to bring some much needed life to the Rom-Com genre. While there are many good Rom-Com films out there they are, for the most part, very predictable. This film tries something new and it works. The addition of some fairly good action scenes helps to give something fresh to the story.
The stars of the film are really great, Tom Hardy & Chris Pine are good as the friends fighting over Reese Witherspoon who seems to be todays Meg Ryan! Once again she plays a sweet if a little ditsy character, but she plays it so well. There wasn’t any real stand out performance though. The main cast were good and the supporting cast ok but that worked for the film.
What makes this film work is the appeal for both sexes. For the ladies we have two men fighting over the girl and she has all the power to decide who wins, but for the man you have the spies using all their available skills and technology to undermine and beat their friend to the girl. Seriously guys, if you had all this at your hands how would you use it? Exactly the same I bet!
The main let down for the film was the sub plot of the revengeful bad guy trying to track down the spies who killed his brother. His part of the story starts out well with the opening scene, but then it is almost forgotten and only shown in minor moments throughout the film. It would have been good to use this more and allowed it to have more of an impact on the main story. There were many directions it could have gone and it would have really enhanced an already good film.
Overall this was an enjoyable film and an ideal date movie.
